Fall Season Review: Cowboy Tennis
December 02, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad is coming off one of the more impressive fall seasons in recent history, as they claimed four titles (two singles, one doubles and one team) throughout the fall.
The season began in the "Golden State" of California, with Cowboys Jurence Mendoza, Tristan Meraut, Nathan Roper and Lukas Finzelberg heading to Napa, California, for the Silverado Invitational on Sept. 11.
On the first day of action, the Pokes won three singles matches against the University of Pacific, including a dominant performance from the redshirt sophomore Finzelberg, who defeated Miguel Diaz in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-3. Over the next few days, Oklahoma State would win nine combined matches to clinch the team title at the tournament.
Cowboys Mendoza and Meraut both finished the tournament undefeated in singles play and were crowned champions of their respective flights. Up next for the Cowboys was the Cajun Classic in Lafayette, Louisiana.
At the Cajun Classic, All-American Arjun Kadhe made a quarterfinals appearance by defeating TCU's Trevor Johnson in amazing fashion. The junior dropped the first set to Johnson, but would battle back to take the second set. In the third, Kadhe would exchange the first few games with Johnson before pulling away from the Horned Frog and securing a spot in the quarterfinals.
Also, Mississippi State transfer and All-American Julian Cash made his Cowboy debut at the Cajun Classic. Cash got his first singles victory with the orange and black in the quarterfinals of the back draw against TCU's Geraldo Lopez.
To begin October, the Cowboys made their way to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the ITA All-American Championships. In the back draw, All-American duo Kadhe/Cash showed why they are one of the elite tandems in the nation. The duo won four consecutive matches to win the back draw title, including victories against the No. 5, No. 20 and No. 55-ranked doubles teams.
By winning the back draw title, Kadhe/Cash clinched their spot at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York, on Nov. 12-15.
One ITA tournament would follow the other, as the Oklahoma State men's tennis team made their way to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the ITA Central Regionals. The tournament featured some of the best talent in the central region, but that didn't stop the Cowboys from showcasing theirs.
On day two of the ITA Central Regionals, Oklahoma State accumulated 11 victories and had five players advance to the round of 16.
In the closing rounds, Cowboys Lucas Gerch and Kadhe fell in the singles quarterfinals, but the All-American Cash defeated No. 98 Felix Corwin of Minnesota in the semifinals to punch his ticket to the finals.
The sophomore was the first Cowboy since 2009 to compete in the main draw final for both singles and doubles at the ITA Regional Championships.
Las Vegas would be the site for Mendoza and Roper's final tournament of the fall, as they competed at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic hosted by UNLV. The Cowboys collected five wins at the tournament and finished runner-up in the doubles bracket.
To conclude the fall season, Kadhe/Cash would travel to the "Big Apple" for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York. The All-American tandem defeated No. 16 Henry Craig/Alex Gasson of Denver in the first round, which marked the first time since 2009 that an Oklahoma State player had advanced past the first round at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships.
After a loss in the second round, Kadhe/Cash made some noise in the back draw by advancing to the semifinals with a straight-set victory over Stanford's Tom Fawcett/David Wilczynski.
The fall season featured some great tennis from the Cowboys, but come spring time the Pokes will be ready to kick their talent into another gear.
Oklahoma State will open up their spring season in Stillwater, as they face UNLV at 2:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Jan. 15.
