Next Day Minute: Solomon's Game-Changing Dunk
December 13, 2015 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER –Mitchell Solomon's dunk with 1:32 left in a tight ballgame against Minnesota not only sent a Gopher-friendly Sanford Pentagon into a frenzy, but it established the tone for the entire Cowboy roster.
Oklahoma State was determined to make the plays down the stretch and dictate the way this game would end – a 62-60 win for OSU.
"It was a huge momentum change," said OSU captain Phil Forte. "Mitch is a guy that we expect to make plays like that, and it was a game-changer. I think that energy he brought to the entire team propelled us to the victory."
Cowboy Quick Hitters
• The Cowboys used a 16-4 run early in the second half to pull ahead of the Gophers, and establish a lead they wouldn't relenquish.
• Tavarius Shine made his return to the floor for the Cowboys and nearly recorded a career high in rebounding. The sophomore missed the previous seven games with a shoulder injury, but piled up seven boards - one shy of his career high.
• Joe Burton finished with nine points, which is just one shy of giving the sophomore just his second career double-digit scoring game. Burton tallied 15 points against George Mason last month.
• The Gophers hit a 25-foot 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to send them into the break with a 30-28 lead. OSU entered the night with an 0-2 record when trailing at the half.
• This was the first appearance for the following starting lineup; PG Evans, G Newberry, G Carroll, F Hammonds, F Solomon. This was OSU's fifth different starting lineup of 2015-16.
• This was the sixth meeting between the Golden Gophers and the Cowboys, but the first since 1986. Entering tonight, Minnesota held a 3-2 edge in the overall series.
• The game was played at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. This was Oklahoma State's second trip to the state of South Dakota, but its third game in the Mount Rushmore State. OSU opened the 1931-32 season with a six-game road trip that included stops in Brookings to take on South Dakota State (Dec. 15, 1931 • L, 20-42) and Vermillion to play South Dakota (Dec. 16, 1931 • L, 23-30). That road trip also included notable stops at Northern Iowa (Dec. 11, 1931 • L, 27-29 OT) and Minnesota (Dec. 12, 1931 • L, 27-40).
Player Spotlight – Jawun Evans
Jawun Evans led Oklahoma State to a win in Big Ten country with an eight-point, eight-assist evening against Minnesota in Sioux Falls, S.D. In the game's closing three minutes, the freshman tallied two assist, a key rebound and a pair of free throws with 12 seconds on the clock that gave the Cowboys a five-point lead. Evans' eight assists are a team-season high, and are the most by a Cowboy since Anthony Hickey had 10 against Baylor last January. What's more, Evans had just a single turnover, and also added a steal.
