Cowboys Continue Doubles Play At ITA All-American Championships
October 07, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
TULSA – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team continued doubles play in the qualifying bracket on Wednesday at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Cowboy duos Tristan Meraut/Nathan Roper and Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza entered the day trying to keep the winning trend alive for the Pokes, after winning their matches yesterday in the Round of 64.
The match of the day and maybe the tournament came on court six with Meraut/Roper facing Tulane's Chi-Shan Jao/Dominik Koepfer for a spot in the Sweet 16.
The Oklahoma State duo started the match off slow, but ended up stealing the first set from No. 39 Jao/Koepfer by winning five of the last six games. In the second set, Jao/Koepfer answered the Cowboy comeback with one of their own, as they won the final three games to take the set, 7-5.
The ultimate tiebreaker for the third set was one of the most unbelievable sets so far this season. Meraut/Roper took a 9-5 lead in the tiebreak, but couldn't end Jao/Kopefer's hopes, as the Tulane duo squared it back up at nine. The comeback lead to a back-and-forth affair between the two for 20 consecutive points, until Jao/Koepfer scored back-to-back points to take the match, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(19).
"It was a great effort from Tristan and Nathan, but we came up just a little short," coach Jay Udwadia said. "You're not going to see many tiebreakers like that."
On court seven, Gerch/Mendoza went to battle with Florida State's Terrance/Terrell Whitehurst. The juniors fought hard, but the Whitehurst brothers went on to win the final two games in each set, including the second set tiebreaker, 7-5, 7-6(3).
Even with two doubles losses today, the Cowboys still have one doubles team with a spot in the main draw, as All-Americans Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash will start play in the doubles main draw tomorrow.
