Cowboys Begin Play At Larry Easley Memorial Classic
October 30, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma State's Jurence Mendoza and Nathan Roper began competition today at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic in Las Vegas, hosted by UNLV.
To begin the day, Roper had a matchup with Shimon Murakami of Mesa Community College in the round of 16. The Cowboy made quick work of Murakami, as he defeated him in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-1, to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.
Mendoza received the No. 2-seed in flight one, which gave him a bye in the round of 16.
In quarterfinals play, Mendoza went head-to-head with Oregon's Cormac Clissold. The junior needed 10 games in each set, but would get the job done against Clissold by taking the match in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Roper looked to carry the momentum from his last match, as he faced Oregon's Bartosz Sawicki in the quarterfinals. After losing the first set, Roper battled in the second set to keep the match alive, but the Duck proved to be too much for the Cowboy, winning the match, 6-2, 6-3.
Tomorrow, Mendoza faces UNLV's Alexandr Cozbinov for a spot in the finals of his respective flight and Roper will resume singles play in the consolation bracket. Also, the two Cowboys begin doubles play with a matchup against Ethan Young-Smith/Jayson Amos of Oregon in the quarterfinals.
