October 19, 2015 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's tennis team swept the championship round of the ITA Central Regional today in Stillwater.
"Today was a great way to finish the weekend, every one of our girls competed very well and had success," coach Chris Young said. "For the girls who won today to come out and win in the fashion that they did, I was really excited."
For the second year in a row, the Cowgirls took home the title in doubles. Senior tandem Kelsey Laurente and Maria Alvarez brought home the championship for the Cowgirls. The OSU duo defeated No. 11-ranked Shannon Hudson and Yuliya Lysa of Arkansas, 6-3, 7-5.
Laurente/Alvarez finished the tournament with an undefeated record.
The win marks the second doubles title in the event for Laurente, who won the title last year with Viktoriya Lushkova.
"For our two seniors, Kelsey and Maria to win in doubles, I think it was a special opportunity for them in their last regional championship to play together," Young said.
With the win, the Cowgirl duo secured a spot in the ITA National Intercollegiates in Flushing Meadows, New York.
In singles action, Katarina Adamovic picked up the second championship of the day for the Cowgirls.
No. 92 Adamovic defeated conference rival Anastasiya Rychagova of Kansas to capture the singles title. Adamovic opened the match in dominant fashion, with a 6-1 victory in the first set.
In the second set, the junior from Serbia received a boost from fans and teammates inside the Greenwood Tennis Center. After Rychagova battled back to even the score in the second set, Adamovic was able to put away the Jayhawk, 7-6 (1).
Adamovic finished the weekend with seven wins without a single loss.
"For Katarina to be able to come out and perform the way she did all weekend, I thought was exceptional, I'm really proud of her efforts."
The Cowgirls have won the title in singles three years in a row. Adamovic joins Kanyapat Narattana and Lushkova on the list of Cowgirls to recently win the championship.
"I think the fact that every one of our girls has a chance to win the regional championship is a good benefit to the program," Young said.
The Cowgirls will return to action in November, beginning with ITF Pro Circuit Qualifying in Waco, Texas.
