Cash Has Big Day At ITA Regional Championships
October 18, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE – Oklahoma State's Julian Cash advanced to the singles and doubles main draw final with partner Arjun Kadhe at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Sunday.
Cash becomes the first Cowboy to compete in the main draw final for both singles and doubles at the ITA Regional Championships, since three-time All-American Oleksandr Nedovyesov in 2009.
The All-American dominated in his semifinals match this morning against Minnesota's Felix Corwin, as he won the match in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-4.
"Julian is playing solid tennis right now by keeping things simple and attacking really well," coach Jay Udwadia said. "It should be a fun final tomorrow."
In doubles play, Kadhe/Cash looked like the No. 1 seed at the tournament by making quick work of Arkansas' Austin Robles/Jacob Herndon in the quarterfinals, 8-3, respectively.
The semifinals match for the All-American duo would be a different story, where they were set to face No. 4 seed Mike Redlicki/Giammarco Micolani of Arkansas. A back-and-forth affair in the first set lead to a tiebreaker, but the Cowboy duo would prevail by taking the first set tiebreak. After a tough first set, Kadhe/Cash took the second set without a problem, winning the semifinals match, 7-6(8), 6-3.
"The more Arjun and Julian play together the better they get," Udwadia said. "We will be ready to compete for the title tomorrow."
Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza were the other Oklahoma State duo still competing in the doubles main draw, having a quarterfinals matchup with No. 2 seed Matthew Kirby/Dylan McCloskey of Tulsa. The two juniors quickly punched their ticket to the semifinals with an impressive victory over the Golden Hurricane duo, 8-4.
In the semifinals, the Cowboy tandem won the first set against Minnesota's Matic Spec/Corwin, but couldn't put the Golden Gopher duo away in the second. The match would come down to an ultimate tiebreaker. Gerch/Mendoza fought to take a quick lead in the tiebreaker, but Spec/Corwin proved to be too much, winning, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(5).
Tomorrow, Bedlam comes early, with Cash facing No. 3 seed Alex Ghilea of Oklahoma at 10 a.m. for the singles main draw title.
At 12:30 p.m., Kadhe/Cash will matchup against Minnesota's Spec/Corwin in the doubles main draw final, as they look to bring home the doubles title.
