Cowboy Duos Advance To Quarterfinals

FAYETTEVILLE – Oklahoma State doubles duos Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash and Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza secured their spots in the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Saturday.
All-American doubles duo Kadhe/Cash dominated in their Sweet 16 doubles match against St. Louis' Luis Miguel Flores/David Ferragut, 8-2, to get the Cowboys some early momentum in doubles play.
Gerch/Mendoza continued the winning trend by defeating Iowa's Nils Hallenstrand/Jonas Larsen, 8-4, to get their fifth doubles win this fall season.
The last Oklahoma State duo to compete in doubles play on Saturday was Lukas Finzelberg/Tristan Meraut. The sophomores battled with Minnesota's Moctic Spec/Felix Corwin, but would fall, 8-2.
Five Cowboys began the day in the Sweet 16 for the singles main draw, as they all looked to make a push into the quarterfinals. Cash and Kadhe took care of their opponents rather quickly, as they both won in straight-sets.
Finzelberg and Meraut couldn't get past the round of 16, with Finzelberg falling to Arkansas' Michael Redlicki in straight-sets, 6-3, 7-6(5), and Meraut coming up short against No. 50 Alex Ghilea of Oklahoma, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(4).
To conclude the Sweet 16, Gerch faced Arkansas' Jose Salazar in a three-set thriller. The junior lost the first set to the Razorback, but would bounce-back to take the final two sets and win the match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6).
In the quarterfinals, Kadhe struggled getting in a grove, falling in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-2, to Oklahoma's Ghilea.
Gerch got locked in a close one with Minnesota's Felix Corwin, as the two exchanged the first two sets, 6-3, 3-6, but the Golden Gopher took the third set to claim the quarterfinals victory, 3-6, 6 3, 6-3.
The last Cowboy remaining in the singles main draw would be the All-American Cash. The sophomore wouldn't have a problem with Drake's Ben Lott, taking the match in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-3. A quarterfinals victory gives Cash a spot in the semifinals, where he will face Minnesota's Corwin tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
Nathan Roper continued play in the singles consolation bracket on Saturday. The junior faced Spec of Minnesota and would fall to the No. 1 seed, 6-3, 6-4.
Two rounds of doubles play (quarterfinals and semifinals) will follow the singles main draw semifinals tomorrow morning.
