October 16, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team compiled 11-straight victories at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday.
Doubles started the day, as Finzelberg/Meraut needed to win their first round matchup against St. Louis' Juan Calero/John Nogalski to join Kadhe/Cash and Gerch/Mendoza in the second round. The Cowboy duo would come out of the gate strong by defeating Calero/Nogalski, 8-4.
In their second doubles match, the two sophomores battled with Oral Roberts' Kenneth Boykin/Barnabas Koncz for a spot in the Sweet 16 and didn't look back, as they beat the Golden Eagles pair, 8-4.
After byes in the first round, Oklahoma State tandems Kadhe/Cash and Gerch/Mendoza looked to continue the momentum.
All-American duo Cash/Kadhe took care of business in the second round by defeating Bradford Zitsch/Andrew Dzulnsky of Nebraska, 8-5.
Juniors Gerch/Mendoza found themselves in a thriller against Arkansas' Santiago Munoz/Juan Marino. The teams went back-and-forth throughout the match, but the Cowboys would rise up and win the tiebreaker to seal the match, 8-7(4).
In singles, four of five Cowboys won their matches in straight-sets, including a dominant performance from Kadhe, as he won, 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
The All-American Cash was the final Cowboy to finish the day, as he went head-to-head with Thomas Kyle of Southern Illinois. The sophomore ended the day just like it started, as he made quick work of Kyle, 6-1, 6-3.
Oklahoma State's Nathan Roper and Jurence Mendoza continued play in the consolation bracket at the Regional. Both Cowboys rebounded with victories in the back draw.
"As a team, we are playing some solid tennis at the moment," coach Jay Udwadia said.
At the end of the day, Oklahoma State had five Cowboys advance to the Sweet 16 in the singles main draw and three Cowboy duos punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 also.
"Tomorrow will be a tough day of competition, as we are getting deeper into draws," Udwadia said. "We are looking forward to the challenge."
Two rounds of singles (Sweet 16 and quarterfinals), one round of doubles (Sweet 16) and one round of consolation play are scheduled to bring tomorrow at 10 a.m.
