October 15, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad had five players advance to the round of 32 in the singles bracket at the ITA Central Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Thursday.
The day began with the round of 128, where Cowboys Lukas Finzelberg, Jurence Mendoza and Nathan Roper looked to join their teammates in the next round.
Finzelberg started the day off right, as he defeated Arkansas' Juan Marino in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-0. Mendoza and Roper both battled in their first round matches, but couldn't come up with a victory.
Oklahoma State's Julian Cash, Lucas Gerch, Arjun Kadhe and Tristan Meraut had first round byes because each received a top-16 seeding.
No. 5 seed Arjun Kadhe went head-to-head with Dominic Bechard of Tulsa in the second round. Kadhe proved to be too much for Bechard, as the All-American took the match in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-3, respectively.
Soon after, Finzelberg would finish his second round match, as the redshirt-sophomore needed an extra game in the first set, but would dominate against Wichita State's Miroslav Herzan, winning, 7-5, 6-2.
On the indoor courts, No. 6 seed Gerch continued Oklahoma State's success by defeating Creighton's Quinn Dippel, 6-2, 6-2, respectively. The junior will matchup with Airam Castellano of UMKC at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 32 on Friday.
The fourth Cowboy to clinch a spot in the third round was No. 12 seed Cash, as he beat Iowa's Jake Jacoby, 7-6(3), 6-4. The All-American will battle Southern Illinois' Thomas Kyle at 1:30 p.m. on Friday for a spot in the Sweet 16.
No. 13 seed Meraut would go into a first set tiebreaker with Eddie Stoica of Wichita State, but that didn't slow down the sophomore, as he prevailed by taking the tiebreak and the second set, 7-6, 6-4.
The first and second round of doubles will be played tomorrow, with Finzelberg/Meraut facing Saint Louis tandem Juan Calero/John Nogalski in the first round. Oklahoma State duos Cash/Kadhe and Gerch/Mendoza both have first round byes.
Singles action will carry on Friday, as Meraut will take on Sergio de Vilchez of Wichita State at noon, Kadhe matches up with Tulsa's Mitchell Pritchard at 11 a.m. and Finzelberg battles UMKC's Andrew
Smirnov at 11 a.m. as well.
Mendoza and Roper will continue play tomorrow in the singles consolation bracket.
