STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team will open its spring season as the nation's 19th-ranked team, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released today.
The Cowgirls jump up two spots after finishing the 2014 season ranked No. 21, and boast two nationally ranked singles players and a top-five doubles team.
2014 All-America, sophomore Viktoriya Lushkova is the nation's No. 10 singles player. The Ukraine native went 12-4 in the fall, winning the ITA Central Region singles championship and reaching the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Also appearing in the national singles rankings is sophomore Katarina Adamovic, who checks in at No. 53. Adamovic saw a lot of fall action, competing in four collegiate tournaments, where she took home the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic title and reached the semifinals of the ITA Central Region singles championship.
Lushkova and partner Kelsey Laurente start the season ranked No. 5 in doubles after a fall season that saw them go 13-2 with an ITA Central Region doubles title and an appearance in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships semifinals. The duo boasts an impressive win over the nation's No. 1 ranked duo from UCLA as well as wins over No. 4,7, and 11.
“We definitely had a good fall season and these rankings are a reflection of those results,” head coach Chris Young said. “We have a great group of girls who have worked hard throughout the year, and we are excited to begin the spring season. We know it's just the beginning, and we have a lot of goals still in front of us and that is exciting.”
The Cowgirls kick off the season with a double header on Jan. 17 as they take on San Jose State at 10:30 a.m. CT and Louisiana Tech at 5 p.m. at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
