STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team starts the season 2-0 after an impressive day, where the Cowgirls won four doubles matches and 12 singles matches en route to defeating San Jose State and Louisiana Tech on Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
“Overall, I thought today was a good day,” head coach Chris Young said. “It was a great way to start the season, getting two wins against two good teams. The girls competed exceptionally well. I thought our doubles play was really good. I thought each of the girls had moments where they played excellent tennis. We just have to build on that and move forward.”
The Cowgirls dominated in the day's first match, shutting out San Jose State's Spartans, 7-0.
In doubles, the No. 5 duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente ended their match quickly with a 6-1 win over San Jose State's Gauvain and Pahz on court one.
Alvarez and Tur Mari wrapped up the doubles point on court three shortly after, defeating the Rey and Cubukcu, 6-2.
OSU showed no signs of slowing down as five of six Cowgirls struck first, winning the first set on their respective courts.
On court three, freshman Vladica Babic impressed in her first college dual match, winning 12 straight games to give the Pokes their first singles win of the season.
Laurente made her spring debut as a Cowgirl, playing the No. 1 spot, where she handily won a 6-3, 6-1 match against Sybille Gauvain.
Sophomore and 53rd-ranked Katarina Adamovic clinched the match for the Cowgirls, defeating Marie Klocker, 6-1, 6-3, on court two.
The Pokes played out the rest of the match, earning straight-set wins from Karyn Guttormsen and Maria Alvarez on courts four and six, respectively.
Carla Tur Mari, a sophomore, finished out the sweep on court five. After losing the first set, 6-4, the Spaniard stormed back to win the second set and a 10-point tiebreaker for the third.
In the second match of the day, the Cowgirls faced Louisiana Tech, against whom they earned their second shutout of the day.
In doubles, the team as a whole surrendered only three games before the Cowgirls grabbed the lead, earning the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
The Cowgirls continued to dominate the day, rattling off four singles wins within minutes of each other.
Tur Mari was the first to finish, shutting down Manoela Chiacchio, 6-0, 6-0.
Adamovic was just as controlling, finishing off Jazmin Britos, 6-1, 6-0. The Cowgirl finished the day giving up only five games in two matches.
A win on court four from Guttormsen sealed the team win for the Cowgirls as the senior defeated Marta Sramkova, 6-0, 6-4.
Alvarez finished her match at the same time also posting a 6-0, 6-4 score over her opponent, Taly Merker.
Babic secured her second college dual win in just as many attempts, beating Tarrannum Handa, 6-1, 6-3, on court three.
In the final match of the day, Laurente earned a hard-fought win on court one, taking the first set to a tiebreaker and holding off Louisiana Tech's Alex Starkova in the second to complete the Cowgirl sweep, winning 7-6, 7-5.
“I just knew I had to stay focused,” newcomer Laurente said. “It was me fighting myself, not my opponent. It was good to get two wins to start my spring at OSU. I'm excited for my career as a Cowgirl.”
The Cowgirls return to competition on Jan. 24-25 as they compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
