STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State men's and women's tennis teams finished the 2014 season in the top 25 of the final team rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday. It marks the first time both teams finished in the top 25 since 2003.
The Cowgirls, slotted at No. 21, earned their highest finish in the rankings since the team finished at No. 16 in 2001. Despite boasting a young roster, the Cowgirls were impressive throughout the 2014 campaign, notching a 16-9 overall record and finishing second in the Big 12 with an 8-2 mark in conference play. The Cowgirls advanced to the Big 12 championship match for the second-consecutive year after they defeated Texas, 4-1 in the conference semifinals. The team also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back years for the first time since the 1985 and 1986 seasons.
The Cowboys come in at No. 25 in the final rankings, their highest finish since 2009. The Cowboys took a big step forward in Jay Udwadia's second year at the helm of the program, notching a 22-8 overall record. The team raised eyebrows across the nation in January when they knocked off 6th-ranked Tennessee in a 4-2 match at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The Cowboys advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament earlier this month when they defeated 39th-ranked Michigan, 4-2.
The ITA will release final singles and doubles rankings next week.
