GAINESVILLE, Fla. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team wrapped up its 2014 campaign with a 4-1 loss to ninth-ranked Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Linder Stadium in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday afternoon.
“I'm happy with the way we ended (the season) today,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Doubles was outstanding and we battled Florida toe-to-toe in all of the matches. Hopefully we will learn from it and use for next season's motivation.”
The Cowgirls (16-9) got off to a hot start in Saturday's match, taking the doubles point with wins on two and three. Karyn Guttormsen and Maria Alvarez began the match on three by picking up two quick breaks and never looked back, defeating Brianna Morgan and Stefani Stojic, 8-4, on three. Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari downed the 27th-ranked tandem of Florida's Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock, 8-4, on two to clinch the point for the Cowgirls.
The Gators tied the match at one when 14th-ranked Olivia Janowicz defeated Megan McCray on two. Janowicz outlasted the Cowgirl freshman in a tiebreaker that decided the second set and the match.
Oyen gave Florida its first lead of the match, knocking off Narattana, 6-0, 6-4, on two.
After seizing the lead from the Cowgirls, the Gators rattled off two wins on four and six to clinch the match. Tur Mari fell to No. 67 Kourtney Keegan on six in a 6-2, 6-3 match before 28th-ranked Alexandra Cercone upended Guttormsen on four.
Before the match was clinched, freshman Katarina Adamovic was a pair of games away from knocking off 99th-ranked Woolcock of Florida on five. Meanwhile, Viktoriya Lushkova was in the midst of trying to force a third set against No. 16 Brianna Morgan in the top singles position.
“I thought we took a step forward this year,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Even though we got to the same spot as we did last year, I thought this team really improved throughout the year and really set a tone and foundation with the young team coming back next year and our expectations continue to move forward.”
Lushkova will travel to Athens, Ga., to compete at the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships. The tournament is set to begin May 21.
