MANHATTAN, Kan. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team picked up its sixth-straight win on Sunday afternoon when it knocked off No. 61 Kansas State, 5-2, at the K-State Tennis Center.
“The conditions in the match today were as tough as I've seen in a long time, so I'm proud of our girls for battling through the wind and a tough K-State team,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “This group continues to find ways to win and that's going to be important moving forward through these last few weeks of conference play and beyond.”
The Cowgirls (10-5, 4-0 Big 12) started the match strong by sweeping doubles with wins on all three courts and taking the early lead.
The Cowgirl tandem of Katarina Adamovic and Karyn Guttormsen won its sixth match of the season by taking down Livia Cirnu and Maria Panaite of Kansas State, 8-2, on three. The duo of Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez clinched the doubles point for OSU, defeating Palma Juhasz and Iva Bago, 8-5, on two to move to 7-1 on the season.
After the doubles point was clinched, Kanyapat Narattana and Viktoriya Lushkova defeated Kansas State's Petra Niedermayerova and Amina St. Hill, 8-7(3), in a tight match.
Maria Alvarez stretched the Cowgirl lead to two when she upended Kansas State's Iva Bago, 6-1, 6-3, on six.
Kanyapat Narattana also won her match in straight-sets. The senior downed Maria Panaite of Kansas State, 6-1, 6-4, on three to put the Cowgirls a point away from the victory. The win was Narattana's sixth-straight singles victory and the 68th of her career.
The Cowgirls sealed the triumph over the Wildcats when Katarina Adamovic knocked off Kansas State's Livia Cirnu, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, on four.
Freshman Megan McCray came up with the Cowgirls' fifth point of the day, taking the second and third sets of her match to defeat Wildcat freshman Palma Juhasz, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, on two. With the win, McCray became the 10th Cowgirl freshman in the Big 12 era to notch 20 overall singles wins.
Kansas State took matches on one and five to close out the match. No. 56 Petra Niedermayerova defeated Viktoriya Lushkova in three sets to hand the Cowgirl freshman her first loss since Jan. 17. Freshman Carla Tur Mari fell in three-sets to Amina St. Hill on five.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Friday, April 4, when they host Iowa State at the Greenwood Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
