LAWRENCE, Kan. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team picked up its fifth-straight win on Friday afternoon, sweeping 47th-ranked Kansas, 7-0. The win was the Cowgirls' fifth shutout of the year.
“I'm proud of the way our team competed today,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Every match in conference this season is going to be a battle, so to win every match on the road was a positive today.”
The Cowgirls (9-5, 3-0 Big 12) began the match by clinching the doubles point with wins on all three courts. The Cowgirl tandem of Karyn Guttormsen and Katarina Adamovic was the first to strike with an 8-4 victory over Caroline Henderson and Morgan Barnhill on three. The point was clinched when Viktoriya Lushkova and Kanyapat Narattana toppled Maria Jose Cardona and Maria Belen Luduena, 8-3, on one. Maria Alvarez and Carla Tur Mari finished off the Jayhawks in doubles, pulling out an 8-6 triumph on two.
In singles, the Cowgirls rattled off wins on all six singles courts, with five coming in straight-sets, to put the Jayhawks away.
Megan McCray was the first to score for Oklahoma State in singles. McCray handled Maria Jose Cardona, defeating the Jayhawk sophomore, 6-1, 6-1, on two. The win was the freshman's 19th overall victory of the season, putting her one win away from being the 10th Cowgirl freshman in the Big 12 era to notch 20 or more singles wins.
Katarina Adamovic put the Cowgirls a point away from the win when she defeated Paulina Los in straight-sets on four.
Freshman Carla Tur Mari also picked up her 19th overall singles win of the season after downing Anastasija Trubica of Kansas, 6-1, 7-5, on five to clinch the match for Oklahoma State.
Although the match had been clinched in favor of the Cowgirls, the two teams continued to battle it out on the three remaining singles courts.
Viktoriya Lushkova came up with the win on one, defeating Dylan Windom in a three-set match on one. With the win, Lushkova picked up her 12th-straight victory.
Senior Kanyapat Narattana ousted Maria Belen Luduena, 6-4, 6-2, on three before junior Karyn Guttormsen sent the Jayhawks packing with a 7-6, 7-5 victory on six.
The Cowgirls will wrap up their weekend road trip on Sunday when they travel to Manhattan, Kan., to face No. 61 Kansas State at 1 p.m.
