Cowgirls Drop Twin Bill to No. 15 Nebraska

STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State softball team fell to No. 15 Nebraska in both games of a double header Friday night at Cowgirl Stadium. The Cowgirls dropped game one 4-3 and game two 8-4.
In the first game, Nebraska got on board in the top of the first inning when Austen Urness singled in Kiki Stokes.
The Cowgirls tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Tarah Ettinger was issued a bases loaded walk, scoring Shannon Kaufman from third.
The Huskers then picked up solo home runs in three consecutive innings, one in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning to put Nebraska up 4-1.
The Cowgirls mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shelby Davis scored when Ari Morrison singled and the ball was mishandled by the center fielder and the next batter, Ettinger, grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Morrison. The rally would fall short, and OSU would drop the first game, 4-3.
Starter Simone Freeman pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits and struck out seven.
At the plate, the Cowgirls had four hits. Morrison went 2-for-3 and Davis and Miranda Cavin had the other hits for the Cowgirls. Ettinger tallied two RBIs.
In game two, Nebraska once again jumped on board in the top of the first inning, scoring on a fielding error. The Huskers made it 2-0 in the top of the third on a solo shot by Hailey Decker and added on a run in the top of the fourth on a fielding error.
The Cowgirls got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when OSU led the inning off with three consecutive hits. Ettinger led the inning off with a single up the middle, Tiffany Mikkelson singled in the next at bat, and the third batter, Danielle Riddle, doubled, scoring Ettinger to cut the score to 3-1.
Nebraska then took a 7-4 lead in the top of the fifth on a grand slam by Decker.
The Cowgirls wouldn't give up and in the bottom of the inning Gessenia DeLaCruz scored on Ettinger's second hit of the day. In the next at bat, Davis scored on a single by Mikkelson and a few batters later, Morrison scored on a fielder's choice to cut the Husker lead to 7-4.
Nebraska would get another run in the top of the seventh, and the Cowgirls would fall by the final score of 8-4.
Offensively, the Cowgirl bats had 11 hits. Mikkelson went 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Ettinger was 2-for-4 with an RBI and DeLaCruzwas 2-for-3. Riddle had one hit for the Cowgirls, but recorded two runs batted in. Davis, Morrison and Kaufman all had hits.
In the circle, Whitney Whitehorn pitched seven innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits and striking out three.
The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a twin bill set to start at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all fans.
