MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team picked up its second win of the season on Friday evening, shutting out the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 7-0, in Minneapolis, Minn.
“Today was another positive step for our girls,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Minnesota came in having not lost a single doubles match, so I'm happy with how we started the match strong winning that point. Each girl was tested and it was a good match for us. I'm looking forward to building on this one tomorrow with Oregon.”
The 29th-ranked Cowgirls (2-3) picked up the doubles point with wins on one and two. Viktoriya Lushkova and Kanyapat Narattana were the first Cowgirls to strike, knocking off Tereza Brichacova and Jessika Mozia of Minnesota, 8-1. Katarina Adamovic and Karyn Guttormsen clinched the point for Oklahoma State with an 8-2 win over Aria Lambert and Paula Rincon Otero.
Oklahoma State was dominant in singles as well, winning four of their six matches in straight-sets. Freshman Carla Tur Mari scored the Cowgirls' second point when she defeated Aria Lambert of Minnesota, 6-4, 6-1, on five. Freshman Megan McCray notched her third win of the spring season, downing Natalia Pintusava on two, 6-1, 6-3, and stretching the Cowgirl lead to three.
Senior Kanyapat Narattana clinched the win for Oklahoma State when she upended Jessika Mozia, 6-2, 6-4 on three.
Freshman Viktoriya Lushkova scored the Cowgirls' fifth point soon after the match was clinched. Lushkova toppled Tereza Brichacova, 6-2, 6-3, on one to pick up her fifth win since joining the team after the fall season.
Karyn Guttormsen and Katarina Adamovic each won their match in third-set tiebreakers to lock up the sweep for the Cowgirls.
With the win, Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young picked up his 50th win since taking over the position, making him the fourth coach in program history to reach that mark.
“I'm not big into my own stats because this program is much bigger than me,” Young said. “I'm just happy we won tonight and I look forward to many more wins this season with this group.”
The Cowgirls will hit the courts again in Minneapolis on Saturday afternoon when they take on Oregon at 1 p.m.
