Softball Travels to San Antonio for UTSA Classic

The Cowgirls open play with Colorado State (4-1) on Friday at 2 p.m. CT, followed by a game with host-school UTSA (3-0) at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, OSU takes on Wichita State (4-0) at 9 a.m. and Rutgers (0-0) at 2 pm. The Cowgirls wrap up play at the tournament on Sunday when they take on UTSA one more time at 11:30 a.m.
This is the ninth match-up between the Cowgirls and Colorado State. Currently, OSU leads the all-time series, 7-1, including last February when the Cowgirls defeated the Rams 4-1 in St. George, Utah. Against UTSA, OSU leads the all-time series 9-0 and defeated the Roadrunners 7-6 in their last meeting on Feb. 10, 2007, in San Marcos, Texas.
The Cowgirls lead the all-time series against Rutgers 6-0, including a 2-1 eight-inning victory against the Scarlet Knights last season on March 15. Finally, the Cowgirls hold a 74-7 all-time series record against the Wichita State. Last season, OSU defeated the Shockers 9-4 and 11-3 in a doubleheader in Wichita.
The Cowgirls are coming off a 2-3 weekend in Baton Rouge, La., at the Tiger Classic. OSU defeated Central Arkansas, 3-0 and beat SIUE 2-1 in eight innings. OSU also lost heartbreaking matchups against No. 21 LSU and No. 24 Minnesota, losing both games, 1-0.
Senior pitcher Simone Freeman owned the circle all weekend for the Cowgirls. She went 2-2 and started three out of five games. She currently sports a 0.31 earned run average and gave up only three runs, one earned. She struck out 30 batters while only walking three. Meanwhile, freshman pitcher Whitney Whitehorn went 0-1 in two starts. In seven innings, she gave up four runs on five hits and currently has a 1.00 ERA.
Offensively, junior Shelby Davis leads the team in batting. In five starts in center field, Davis is batting .350 with seven hits and two runs batted in, including the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning against SIUE. Sophomore Tiffany Mikkelson is hitting .296 in five starts at third base. She has four hits in 14 at-bats, four RBIs and sports a .357 slugging percentage.
Defensively, freshman catcher Miranda Cavin threw out 3-of-4 runners attempting to steal a base.
