Cowboy and Cowgirl Tennis Finish First Day in Florida

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – Members of the Oklahoma State men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up the first day of the Dickie V Clay Court Classic on Friday in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
The day started with doubles play with all three OSU teams seeing success.
Cowgirls Maria Alvarez and Carla Tur Mari earned a spot in the round of 16 with an 8-5 win over the Safron/Vasilyev duo from Boston College. They snatched another 8-5 victory over Tennessee's Lindl/Olivares duo. OSU's Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic earned a first-round bye, and went on to handling the Aiello/Tiefel duo from Colorado, 8-1, in the round of 16.
For the Cowboys, Nicolai Ferrigno and Jurence Mendoza defeated Princeton's El Tonbari/Yablon, 8-6, to advance in the tournament. The duo notched another win on the day with a dominating 8-2 win over Jaruvang and Mushayev of Arizona.
Play will continue for all the OSU doubles teams on Saturday.
In singles, Babic, Adamovic and Alvarez sailed through to the round of 16, each winning in straight sets. Babic defeated Vasilyev in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Adamovic only gave up two games en route to a dominating 6-1, 6-1 victory over Stephanie Fox of Kentucky, and Alvarez picked up a 6-3, 7-6(8) win over Luise Intert of North Florida.
Tur Mari fell just short in her first round of singles play to Florida's Spencer Liang, 6-4, 7-5. The Cowgirl later earned a win in the consolation round by injury default.
To move to the quarters, Adamovic beat Brittany Lindl of Tennessee, 7-5, 6-2. Alvarez also moved on to the quarterfinals, defeating Liza Tymchenko of Memphis in a three-set scuffle, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Babic suffered a second-round 6-4, 6-4 loss to Victoria Olivares of Tennessee to round out her play for the day.
On the Cowboys' side Mendoza picked up a first-round win, taking out Jonathan Cornish of Virginia, 6-4, 6-4. He later fell to Andres Alfonso of FGCU, 7-5, 6-1, in the round of 16.
Ferrigno lost his first match to Caio Gomes of North Florida, 6-4, 6-3, but later picked up a definitive win over FGCU's Samuel Chaffin in the consolation bracket, 6-1, 6-3.
