October 18, 2014 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER - Two Oklahoma State women's tennis doubles teams and four singles players advanced to Sunday's action of the USTA/ITA Central Regional on Saturday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
"I am proud of our girls for a great day today," coach Chris Young said. "Everyone is competing well, and it is great to see their hard work being rewarded. We wanted to play well this weekend at home and they have done that. Now we want to continue with this effort tomorrow and encourage our fans to come support these girls."
All three Oklahoma State doubles teams got off to a good start with dominant wins from each team, advancing the Cowgirls to the round of 16.
The top-seeded team of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente defeated Leenabanchong and Laskutova of Tulsa, 8-3, in their first doubles match of the tourney.
No. 6-seed team of Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic shut out SIU's Tomishima and Monaghan, 8-0, and eighth-seeded Maria Alvarez and Carla Tur Mari beat Omaha's Johnson/Lo duo, 8-2.
In the day's second round of doubles, the Lushkova/Laurente tandem took out the Castellano/Juhasz team from K-State, 8-4.
Adamovic and Babic eliminated Wichita State's Schiller/Porubin duo in dramatic fashion. The match went to a seven-point tiebreaker, where OSU trailed early, 4-2. The Cowgirls rallied to win five points in a row, with Adamovic serving up an ace in the final point to take the match.
Alvarez and Tur Mari fell out of the bracket when they suffered an 8-3 loss to Cardona and Luduena of Kansas.
In singles, four of five Cowgirls advanced to the quarterfinals.
Lushkova was the first to advance with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mizzou's Kelli Hine.
Adamovic secured her spot shortly after with her own 6-4, 6-2 win over Caroline Ryba of Minnesota.
Alvarez was the third Cowgirl to advance. The junior led early in the match but dropped the first set to Mackenzie Craft of Arkansas, 6-4. She took control of the second set with a 6-3 win and forced the match to a third set. The Spaniard kept the momentum going and eventually won the match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The final Cowgirl to advance was freshman Vladica Babic, who took on Dobby Leenabanchong of Tulsa. Babic dominated the first set, 6-2, and went on to win the second set, 6-4.
Tur Mari suffered a straight-set loss to Marcela Cichon of Tulsa to knock her out of the championship bracket.
In the consolation matches, Laurente and senior Karyn Guttormsen represented the Pokes.
Guttormsen suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Tulsa's Ksenia Laskutova, while Laurente won her match, defeating Ana Gasparovic of Iowa State, 6-2, 6-4.
The Cowgirls will continue competition when ITA Central Region Championship action continues on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater.
