Cowgirls Wrap Up Second Day of ITA Regionals

STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State women's tennis team found success on the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Championships in Stillwater on Friday, taking 13 of 15 total matches.
The Cowgirls started the day with first-round main draw doubles competition. The tandem of Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic downed Collins and McNeely of Kansas, 8-4, in their first round doubles match. Cowgirls Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez were impressive in doubles action, easily handling Yacaman and Toro of Saint Louis, 8-1. After receiving a bye in the first round of doubles play, the top-seeded duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente will join the other two pairs of Cowgirls competing in the round of 32 on Saturday when they face Tulsa's Leenabanchong and Laskutova.
The Cowgirls were just as impressive in singles play on Friday, putting five into the tournament's round of 16.
The region's top seed Viktoriya Lushkova cruised through her first two singles matches of the tournament. Lushkova outgunned Natasha Tomishima of Southern Illinois, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of action before shutting out Tulsa's Mahitha Daddireddy, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch a spot in the round of 16.
Cowgirl Katarina Adamovic blanked Iowa State's Ana Gasparovic, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the round of 32 where she defeated Kansas State's Palma Juhasz, 6-4, 6-2. Carla Tur Mari held off Drake's Adrienne Jensen in the second set to pick up a 6-1, 7-6 first-round victory. Tur Mari snagged her spot in the round of 16 with her straight-set win over seventh-seeded Tereza Brichacova.
Cowgirl newcomer Vladica Babic picked up two straight-set wins on the day. Maria Alvarez also notched a pair of straight-set triumphs, outlasting a second-set push from Wichita State's Aleksandra Trifunovic before taking down Tulsa's Renata Kuricova, 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Karyn Guttormsen defeated Iowa State's Ksenia Pronina, 6-3, 6-2, in her first-round match, but was upended in the second round by Gabriela Porubin. Kelsey Laurente also dropped a tough match, falling to Tulsa's Saana Saarteinen in the first round of singles play.
The Cowgirls will look to continue their winning ways when ITA Central Region Championship action continues on Saturday morning at 9 a.m., at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater.
