Three Cowgirls Advance to ITA Central Region Main Draw

STILLWATER - Three Oklahoma State women's tennis players, Maria Alvarez, Karyn Guttormsen and Carla Tur Mari, earned spots in Friday's USTA/ITA Central Region singles main draw on Thursday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
With the three Cowgirls advancing from the qualifying bracket, that gives OSU a full squad in tomorrow's main draw.
"I'm proud of the girls that played today and the fact that they went out there, did what they needed to do and started off strong," coach Chris Young said. "All of them wanted to advance to tomorrow and they were able to do that so I'm just looking forward to a good day of competition tomorrow."
Alvarez, Guttormsen and Tur Mari all sailed through the first round of the qualifying bracket, collectively only giving up one game.
Guttormsen powered through her match against Florencia Magmi of South Dakota State, taking down the Bison, 6-0, 6-0.
Alvarez followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 win for herself over Drake's Lea Kozulic in the first round.
Tur Mari also advanced to the second round with ease, defeating Ximena Puentes of ORU, 6-0, 6-1.
In the second round, Guttormsen faced Flavia Araujo of Arkansas, where she pulled ahead quickly with a 6-1 win in the first set and maintained control of the match, winning the second set 6-3 and sending her to Friday's bracket.
Tur Mari took on Mackenna Maddox of Nebraska in her second match, who she bested in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Alvarez was the final Cowgirl to advance to Friday. The junior fell behind early in the first set of her match against OU's Ann Pepper, but stormed back to win it 7-5 and carried that momentum into the second set, which she won, 6-2.
The USTA/ITA Central Regional will continue at the Greenwood Tennis Center tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the main draws doubles followed by the singles main draw.
In addition to Alvarez, Guttormsen and Tur Mari, No. 1 seed Viktoriya Lushkova, No. 2 seed Kelsey Laurente, No. 9-seed Katarina Adamovic and No. 14-seed Vladica Babic will represent the Cowgirls in the singles bracket.
All three of the Cowgirl doubles teams enter the doubles bracket seeded, with the Lushkova/Laurente tandem as the top seed, the Adamovic/Babic team at No. 6 and the Alvarez/Tur Mari duo as the No. 8-seed.
