SALISBURY, N.C. – The voice of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Dave Hunziker, has been named the 2013 Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year, it was announced today by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
As part of the OSU Cowboys Sports Network/Learfield, Hunziker serves as the radio play-by-play voice for the OSU football and men's basketball teams and also hosts television shows for head coaches of both sports.
“For me, it's a huge honor for my peers to choose me for this award,” Hunziker said. “It's really a testament to our whole crew. It's really all of us that work hard and it's an award for all of us. I'm thankful for our fans, and for Learfield, Kip Racy, Mike Holder and the rest of the leadership that gives the freedom to try new things and be creative. This is really the selection of our crew. I'm very honored by it.”
This marks the first Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year award for Hunziker, who is in his 13th season at OSU. Hunziker came to Stillwater from Western Kentucky and has also served as the voice of Radford athletics and the Big South Conference.
Hunziker's first call for the Cowboys came during the 2001 football season. In the second game of the season against Louisiana Tech, Hunziker yelled, "Pistols Firing," after the Cowboys scored a touchdown, and that phrase has been his signature call ever since.
Additionally, OSU beat writer Jimmie Tramel, a member of the Tulsa World staff, was named the 2013 NSSA Oklahoma Sportswriter of the Year, also winning the honor for the first time.
