MAUI, Hawaii -
The Oklahoma State women's tennis team opened the first two days of competition at the Hawaii Pacific Hidden Duals in Maui, Hawaii, by winning eight of its first 14 singles matches and four of its first seven doubles matches.
Junior Karyn Guttormsen took both of her singles matches in the opening two days of the tournament, including an impressive three-set victory over Georgia's Kate Fuller. Guttormsen bounced back from dropping her first set, 6-0, to take the second set and knock off Fuller, 11-9, in a third set tiebreaker.
Kanyapat Narattana carried over some momentum from her monstrous fall season, notching a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Celina Goetti before falling to No. 4 Lauren Herring in her second match of the weekend.
Maria Alvarez and Morgan McCray also notched straight-set victories in the first two days of competition. Alvarez defeated Hawaii Pacific's Lea Kruse-Utermann, 6-2, 7-5, while McCray knocked off Sofia Tavitan, 6-0, 6-3.
Cowgirls Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari took one of two matches in doubles play in the first two days of competition. The Cowgirl duo completed a dominant 6-1 victory over Lorena Gheorghe and Magdalena Smejova of Hawaii Pacific.
“The first two days here we have got exactly what we needed,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Tough matches at the beginning of the year, which will make us better. Georgia is one of the best teams in country and we had great battles with them. Although they came out on top, this is going to make us better.”
The 29th-ranked Cowgirls will look to finish the Hawaii Pacific Hidden Duals strong with competition in Maui scheduled to wrap up on Sunday.
