Cowgirls Finish Strong at Missouri Invitational

The Oklahoma State women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Missouri Invitational in Kansas City, Mo., on Friday. The Cowgirls finished the tournament strong, winning six of the day's eight matches. Cowgirl freshman Megan McCray was crowned singles champion, while Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari took home the tournament's doubles title.
The Cowgirls faced Missouri in doubles in the first event of the day, and took two of the three matches from the Tigers. Oklahoma State's Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari won a tiebreaker to defeat Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Cassidy Spearman, 9-8 (8-6). Maria Alvarez and Karyn Guttormsen got the other win for the Cowgirls, downing Missouri's Elisha Gabb and Kelli Hine, 8-2.
The Cowgirls were also impressive in singles play on Sunday, facing Princeton in the team's final event of the tournament. Megan McCray bounced back from losing her first set to knock off Princeton's Katherine Flannigan in a third set tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 11-9. Senior Kanyapat Narattana defeated Emily Hahn, 6-1, 6-3, to pick up her first singles win of the tournament. Carla Tur Mari notched her first singles victory of the tournament as well, taking down Princeton's Dorothy Tang, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Morgan McCray was also triumphant in singles play on Sunday, defeating Tracy Dong, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Karyn Guttormsen took the second set of her match to push Alanna Wolff to a third set tiebreaker, but fell to Wolff, 7-6, 4-6, 10-7.
“Overall, it was a productive weekend,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “We made a lot of improvement in doubles this week. For the second straight tournament, we played our best on the final day, which is something I'm very pleased with.”
The Cowgirls will travel to Norman, Okla., next month to compete in the ITA Central Region Championships. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday, Oct. 18, and wrap up on Monday, Sept. 21.
