STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State battled Washington State to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
All four goals in the match came before intermission. The Cowgirls are now 3-2-3 on the season, while WSU is 5-0-2.
“The way the game was, it was huge to pull out a draw,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “Washington State was the better team from start to finish, and we were very, very lucky to come out with a draw. We didn't play well enough, our mentality wasn't good enough, we were slow to the ball, we were slow of thought. From our standpoint, it was a bad performance. But give Washington State a bunch of credit – they're an excellent team, and they can count themselves very unlucky that they didn't win today.”
Micaela Castain put the Cougars on top early, netting a goal from 30-yards out on a free kick in the 12th minute.
Six minutes later, OSU got the equalizer when Allie Stephenson delivered a shot from near the endline that found the far post to tie the score at 1-1.
Courtney Dike would give the home team the lead in the 43rd minute, netting her team-leading seventh goal of the season off an assist from Haley Maurice as she delivered a shot from six-yards out.
OSU's lead was short lived, however, as just 48 seconds later, Castain came through with her second goal of the match to knot things up at 2-2.
While there were no scores over the final 65 minutes, there were plenty of chances, especially for the Cougars, who finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots.
In the 57th minute, WSU's Kourtney Guetlein had an open-net chance after beating Cowgirl goalie Rosa Medina, but she sent her shot wide.
OSU had a trio of strong scoring opportunities in the second half. Dike had a pair of shots in a four-second span in the 60th minute, the first of which hit the post, and an Allie Stephenson free kick from 23-yards out sailed just wide in the 79th minute.
The Cougars outshot OSU, 4-0, in the two overtime periods and nearly recorded the golden goal twice. In the first overtime, Medina made a game-saving play, sliding and winning the ball from Cara Wegner before she could attempt a shot. And in the second extra period, WSU scored what it thought was the game winner before learning they had been whistled for a foul to disallow the score.
“Our opportunities were few and far between so the fact we scored two was pleasing,” Carmichael said. “(WSU) is a great defensive team, and they looked very good going forward against us. You have to credit them for being strong and being very physical with us.”
OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowgirls travel to Houston to take on Rice.
