STILLWATER -- Networks and game times have been set for the inaugural Big 12/SEC Challenge, it was announced today by both the Big 12 Conference and the Southeastern Conference, in conjunction with ESPN. Oklahoma State, ranked No. 11 in the ESPN.com Preseason Top 25, will host the South Carolina Gamecocks at 8:30 pm on Friday, Dec. 6, and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
OSU and South Carolina have played only once previously on the hardwood, a 70-61 loss by the Cowboys on Dec. 23, 1975, as part of the Carolina Classic. Oklahoma State is 12-15 against the founding members of the Southeastern Conference, and 108-109 against the four members who have joined in the past 2-1/2 decades. South Carolina and Arkansas joined the league in 1991 (OSU is 36-14 vs the Razorbacks), while Texas A&M (31-17) and Missouri (41-77) were added to the SEC in 2012.
South Carolina is coached by Frank Martin, former head coach at Kansas State. Martin was 4-4 against Oklahoma State during his tenure in the Big 12, including one season as an assistant with the Wildcats. He guided KSU to four NCAA Tournament appearances in his five seasons as head coach of the Wildcats, and won at least 21 games each season.
South Carolina finished 14-18 last year and returns five players that started at least 10 games in 2012-13, including sophomore Michael Carerra. An SEC All-Freshman team selection last year, he averaged 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Oklahoma State returns four starters from last year's squad that finished 24-9 overall. Starters returning are Big 12 Player of the Year and All-American Marcus Smart, All-Big 12 Second Team selection Markel Brown, All-Big 12 Third Team pick Le'Bryan Nash, and Big 12 All-Defensive member Michael Cobbins.
Other games in the Big 12/SEC Challenge that include preseason top-25 teams are: Auburn at No. 25 Iowa State, top-ranked Kentucky vs No. 19 Baylor in Arlington, Texas, and fifth-ranked Kansas at No. 7 Florida. All 10 games will be televised on the ESPN family of networks.
