AUBURN, Ala. - Oklahoma State's women's golf team opened play at the NCAA East Regional with a 290 on Thursday to stand in a tie for sixth place at Auburn University Club.
The Cowgirls' 2-over total tied them with North Carolina for sixth. The duo finished the day two shots clear of Northwestern and Notre Dame at the par-72, 6,259-yard layout. OSU came in a stroke behind Texas, while Alabama fired an 11-under 277 to lead by six over Arkansas and Tulane at 283.
Three players shared the individual lead with Arkansas' Emma Lavy, Tennessee's Erica Popson and Alabama's Emma Talley all posting 5-under 67s.
OSU was led by freshman Julie Yang, who fired a 2-under 70 to stand in a five-way tie for ninth place. With OSU starting its day on the back nine, Yang opened with a par, but found trouble on the 11th where she made a double-bogey at the 378-yard par 4. However, she bounced back with birdies at Nos. 13 and 15 to move back to even.
Yang turned at 1-over 37 after carding a bogey at the 18th. She finished with a bogey-free inward nine that featured birdies at Nos. 4, 6 and 7 to get in under par for the day.
Juniors Josephine Janson and Jayde Panos each posted even-par 72s to come in tied for 21st place.
Senior Kelsey Vines and junior Lauren Falley shared 65th place after posting 4-over 76s.
The Cowgirls will begin their second round tomorrow at 12:56 p.m. (CST) and will once again be grouped with North Carolina and Virginia.
