STILLWATER - After a week off for finals, the Oklahoma State softball team returns to action this weekend when the Cowgirls take on sixth-ranked Texas in a Big 12 battle this weekend. The three-game series begins Friday at 7 p.m., with a 3 p.m. start on Saturday and a noon first pitch on Sunday.
The Cowgirls are 11-24 all-time against the Longhorns dating back to 1997. OSU is looking to avenge last season's series loss at the hands of Texas (42-6, 12-2 Big 12) when they took the series two games to one in Austin, Texas.
The Cowgirls (28-22, 4-8) haven't played since April 25 when they swept Wichita State in a double header in Wichita, Kan., winning 9-4 in game one and 11-3 in game two. In those two contests, senior Amy Graham went 6-for-8 with a home run and four RBIs while freshman Tiffany Mikkelson when 4-for-6 with a double and five RBIs.
Overall, the offense continues to be a strong point for the Cowgirls. Junior Tarah Ettinger continues to lead the team in five offensive categories: hits (48), home runs (nine), RBIs (39), total bases (81) and slugging percentage (.559). Senior Tamara Brown leads the team in runs scored with 34, and Mikkelson leads the team in doubles with 13.
In the circle, senior Kat Espinosa is 16-15 and has compiled a 2.45 earned run average. In 34 starts, she has struck out 187 batters. In 121-1/3 innings, junior Simone Freeman (12-7) has a 2.42 ERA and 154 strikeouts.
Friday will be Pink Day and the Cowgirls will wear special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off in a silent auction during the game. All proceeds will go to help cancer research. Sunday's game will be Senior Day and fans that can't make it out can watch the game on ESPN.
