Stillwater, Okla. — Oklahoma State will host South Carolina of the Southeastern Conference in the inaugural Big 12/SEC Challenge, it was announced jointly today by the Big 12 and SEC Conference offices. The Cowboys will host the Gamecocks on Friday, Dec. 6.
South Carolina is coached by Frank Martin, former head coach at Kansas State. Martin was 4-4 against Oklahoma State during his tenure in the Big 12, including one season as an assistant with the Wildcats. He guided the Wildcats to four NCAA Tournament appearances in his first six seasons, and five 20-win seasons.
South Carolina finished 14-18 last year and returns five players that started at least 10 games in 2012-13, including sophomore Michael Carerra. An SEC All-Freshman team selection last year, he averaged 9.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
OSU and USC have met just once on the hardwood. South Carolina hosted Oklahoma State in the Carolina Classic on Dec. 23, 1975, with the Gamecocks defeating the Cowboys, 70-61.
Oklahoma State returns four starters from last year's squad that finished 24-9 overall. Starters returning are Big 12 Player of the Year and All-American Marcus Smart, All-Big 12 Second Team selection Markel Brown, All-Big 12 Third Team pick Le'Bryan Nash, and Big 12 All-Defensive member Michael Cobbins.
