Former Cowboy Lonnie Boeckman Passes

Stillwater, Okla. -- Lonnie Boeckman, a member of the Cowboy Basketball team in the mid-1970s, passed away Wednesday afternoon due to complications after surgery at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was 58.
Boeckman, a native of Okeene, Okla., made the 70-mile trek due east down Highway 51 to Oklahoma State after being named All-State and an honorable mention All-American in high school for coach Keith Young. He was a member of the Cowboy Basketball team from 1973-77 under coach Guy Strong.
Boeckman, listed at 7-feet, 4-inches tall during his playing days at OSU, saw action 41 games in his career, starting three during his senior season. He scored 10 points on three occasions during his career, at Texas Tech as a junior and at Missouri and at Oklahoma City as a senior. He blocked four shots at Colorado his senior season.
Boeckman changed his major after playing basketball and got a degree in mechanical power technology in 1982. According to a 2001 article in The Oklahoman, he returned to Okeene and had been working in his family's service station ever since.
Lonnie is survived by two brothers, Larry and Lenny, both of Okeene, and one sister, Lana, of Atlanta, Ga., numerous nieces and nephews, along with many other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian burial for Boeckman will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Okeene (211 S. 5th Street). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in his memory. The Recitation of the Rosary will also be held at St. Anthony's at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 12.
