Cowgirl Tennis Downs No. 12 Nebraska in San Diego

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team wrapped up its week in San Diego on Thursday with a 5-2 upset win over No. 12 Nebraska.
The 35th-ranked Cowgirls (9-3, 1-1 Big 12) took control of the match early, winning the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana took down their second straight ranked doubles team when they edged the 7th-ranked tandem of Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt, 8-5, in the one spot. Cowgirls C.C. Sardinha and Maria Alvarez notched the doubles win on court three, defeating Izabella Zgierska and Maggy Lehmicke, 9-7.
Senior Malika Rose continued her spectacular performance in singles play when she knocked off 10th-ranked Mary Weatherholt on court one. The victory was Rose's third win against ranked competition this season. Kanyapat Narattana also turned in an excellent match in singles play, grabbing a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nebraska's Janine Weinreich in the fifth spot.
Maria Alvarez notched another victory for Oklahoma State on Thursday, defeating Maggy Lehmicke in straight sets on four, 6-4, 6-4.
Karyn Guttormsen would seal the upset for the Cowgirls when she downed Izabella Zgierska of Nebraska, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the fifth spot.
"I'm proud of this team,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “They continue to grind out matches and show the character and toughness that our program believes in. This was a team win because everyone contributed and competed. Malika had an exceptionally good day with two ranked wins, but you can't forget about Karyn who clinched the match or the other girls who put us in a position to win because of their victories.”
“This is one of the biggest wins for our program so we will enjoy it and the success of our trip,” Young said. “We also want to thank Madeline Pickens and the entire family at Del Mar for hosting us this week, they gave us a great experience for the two matches.”
The Cowgirls will return to Stillwater on Wednesday, March 27, to face off with Kansas at the DeBois Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
