Palm Springs, Calif. - The Oklahoma State softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday to close out the 2013 Mary Nutter Classic. The Cowgirls fell to No. 13 UCLA, 5-1 and lost to Long Beach State, 3-1, in the nightcap.
OSU went 2-3 in the classic and moved to 7-7 on the year.
In the early game, the Cowgirls fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and never recovered. OSU cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second inning. Senior Amy Graham doubled to right-center scoring senior Tamara Brown, but that was as close as they would get.
The Bruins (11-1) sealed the victory with a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Graham led Oklahoma State at the plate. Graham went 1-for-3 including an RBI double. OSU starter senior Kat Espinosa took the complete-game loss. Espinosa went six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out two.
In game two, Long Beach State (5-6) got on the board first, scoring a run in the third inning and adding two in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
The Cowgirls mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Stephanie Brewer came through with a pinch hit double that scored sophomore Gessenia DeLaCruz bring the score to 3-1. Despite a tough effort, the Cowgirls eventually fell, 3-1.
OSU starting pitcher junior Simone Freeman (2-4) went three innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out three. Espinosa came on in relief and pitched the final four innings, giving up no runs, a hit and striking out five in the process.
OSU returns to action next weekend for their home opener Friday, March, 1 at 6:00 p.m. against Houston.
