OSU Track Wraps Up Day One At Big 12 Championships
February 23, 2013 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
Feb. 23, 2013
AMES, Iowa -
Nick Miller dominated the men's weight throw, Caitlin Way scored in the women's weight throw and two Cowboys scored in the men's 5,000 meter run to lead the Oklahoma State men's and women's track and field teams in day one at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in Ames, Iowa.
Miller's launch of 20.63m/67-08.25 was the first throw of the competition, and it was not matched the rest of the way.
In the women's weight throw, Caitlin Way threw a 18.39m/60-00.04, which was good enough for seventh place at the meet, meaning both throwers who went today scored for the team and were All-Big 12 performers.
“This was big for the throws group,” OSU throws coach John Baumann said. “We're trying to build the program, and this gave us so much exposure. We don't have the history of the other programs, but as long as we keep doing what we're doing, we're helping the team.”
In the men's 5,000 meter run, two OSU runners scored for the team. Girma Mecheso finished second, running a 13:57.06, which is the seventh-fastest time in school history. Brian Gohlke set a new personal best by more than 35 seconds, with a 14:16.42.
In the women's 5,000 meters, Victoria Fratczak scored a big five points, finishing fourth, in 16:36.47, a new personal best.
In the women's distance medley relay, OSU, which entered the meet as two-time defending champs in the event, was unable to defend its crown. The Cowgirls finished second, just behind Texas.
In the prelims, Piliusina, Clara Nichols, Raul Botezan were all the top qualifiers in their respective events.
“Today went very well,” OSU Coach Dave Smith said. “There were a lot of good surprises. We're leading both of the 1,000 meters and the 600 yards, the DMR's ran well, Caitlin [Way] placed in the weight throw and of course Nick [Miller] is a Big 12 champion. Today went about as well as it could have.”
11 combined Cowboys and Cowgirls qualified for tomorrow's finals, which will start at 11 a.m.
