About Oklahoma State
Seventh-ranked Oklahoma State is 9-1 this season following a 70-55 victory over Louisiana Tech Saturday afternoon in the All-College Classic in Oklahoma City. The Cowboys are averaging more than 88 points per game this season with five players averaging double figures. Marcus Smart leads the scoring attack with 19 ppg, tops in the Big 12 Conference. Markel Brown is averaging 15.9 ppg, while Le'Bryan Nash (13.8 ppg), Phil Forte (11.7 ppg) and Brian Williams (10.1 ppg) are all averaging double figures.
OSU is shooting 49.8% from the floor, including 39.5% from beyond the arc. The Cowboys have a scoring margin of 23.8 points per game. They also have a +2.9 rebounding margin and a +5.6 turnover margin. OSU's defense has allowed more than 70 points just three times this season, giving up 64.6 ppg and 38.6% FG defense.
About Delaware State
Delaware State is 2-8 on the season following a 64-62 overtime loss to Howard in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn Sunday evening. The Hornets are led by junior forward Tyshawn Bell who is averaging 11 ppg and is 31-of-35 (88.6%) from the free-throw line. Senior guard Casey Walker is the only other Hornet averaging in double figures at 10.8 ppg and he's also leading the team with 6.2 rebounds per contest. Two other players — Kendal Williams and Kendall Gray — are averaging 9.9 and 9.7 ppg, respectively.
As a team, DSU is averaging 60.3 ppg while shooting 40.5% from the floor and just 30.6% from beyond the arc. The Hornets are averaging just 11.7 turnovers per game. Delaware State is coached by Greg Jackson, in his 14th season as head coach. He is four wins shy of becoming the Hornets' all-time winningest coach.
Against the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Oklahoma State has played just three times against current members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, once against three different teams and all in Stillwater. The Cowboys defeated North Carolina A&T 81-67 on Dec. 2, 1996, beat Savannah State 83-56 on Jan. 6, 2009, and defeated Coppin State 79-61 on Jan. 5, 2010. Other members of the conference which OSU has never played are: Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Hampton, Howard, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Morgan State, Norfolk State, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State.
OSU Ties to Delaware
There really aren't any, at least not with the current members of either team. The only player in Cowboy Basketball history to hail from the state of Delaware is Janavor Weatherspoon, who played for Oklahoma State from 2003-05. He was from Camden, which is a suburb of Dover, home of Delaware State. Weatherspoon was a member of OSU's 2004 Final Four team, which will be reunited for the Bedlam game on Feb. 15, 2014, to celebrate the 10-year anniversary.
Up Next for OSU
Oklahoma State will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., this weekend to play Colorado in the featured game of a doubleheader in the MGM Grand Showcase at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:30 pm CT (8:30 pm local time), and the game will follow a matchup of New Mexico vs Marquette. It will be Oklahoma State's final game before a break for the holiday.
OSU will then take off nine days before hosting Robert Morris on Monday, Dec. 30, at 6 pm in a game televised by ESPNU. It will be the final non-conference game of the regular season before the Cowboys open Big 12 Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 4, at Kansas State.
