BARCELONA, Spain - Oklahoma State's Nick Miller competed this morning in the men's hammer throw at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain. His throw of 67.46 meters/ 221-02 failed to qualify him for the final round Saturday afternoon. He placed 25th in a field where the top 24 advanced.
After fouling on his first two throws, Miller then record a distance of 67.46 meters/ 221-02, which placed him 13th out of 24 in his group and 25th overall. While that mark did not qualify him for the event final, it was still a good performance from Miller and ranks as the second-farthest toss of his career.
Miller's showing on Friday wraps up a strong freshman campaign for the Carlisle, United Kingdom native that was highlighted by a Big 12 Championship in the hammer throw. He became the first Cowboy athlete to win an outdoor conference title in the hammer throw since Wallace Thornberry in 1901. He also set an Oklahoma State school record when he launched a 7.26 kilogram hammer 67.56 meters/221-08 at the Hammerama meet in Scotland.
His Cowboy teammate, Kirubel Erassa, will compete in the men's 5,000 meter run tomorrow afternoon.
