ST. LOUIS - Oklahoma State's Liz Donohoe was one of five players named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association's watch list for the 2011-12 Women's National Freshman of the Year award.
Donohoe is currently the Big 12 Conference's leading freshman scorer at 12.8 points per game and rebounder at 6.8 boards per contest. The Edmond, Okla., native is also third among the league's freshmen in steals per game at 1.12 per game and second among all players in free-throw percentage at 87.5 percent. Donohoe has been named the league's freshman of the week on five occasions.
The announcement of the winner will come at the annual USBWA breakfast at the NCAA Women's Final Four on Tues., April 3, in Denver.
In addition to Donohoe, Duke forward Elizabeth Williams, Kentucky guard Bria Goss, Connecticut forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Tennessee point guard Ariel Massengale were named to the list.
Although these five newcomers have been selected for the watch list, all freshmen remain eligible to earn the tenth annual award when balloting by the entire membership begins next Monday.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected a women's All-America team since the 1996-97 season.
