STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State extended its school-record winning streak to 13 games Sunday as the No. 2 Cowgirls knocked off Missouri, 2-0, at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
With Sunday's win, which marked OSU's ninth shutout this season, the Cowgirls improved to 13-0-0 and 2-0-0 in Big 12 Conference play. Along with extending its winning streak, OSU tied a program record with its 13th consecutive match without a loss.
“Missouri throws up so many different challenges,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “The system, they press very well, they're athletic, very aggressive. We dealt with it very well…
“From our goalkeeping to our defenders to our midfield, we were great. From the middle third to the front third, we were awesome. We just didn't bury the chances we created and made it a lot tougher than it needed to be. But (Missouri is) always tough, and we'll take a 2-0 win any day.”
OSU outshot Mizzou 25-18 in the match, including a 12-5 advantage in the opening half.
But it wouldn't be until the 34th minute when the Cowgirls got on the scoreboard. After a shot by Krista Lopez was saved by MU goalie McKenzie Sauerwein and Sarah Brown's shot off the deflection was blocked, Abbey Akin found herself with the ball and an open net opportunity. The freshman buried the seven-yard shot for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 OSU lead.
OSU continued its assault on the Tigers' defense in the second half, but numerous near misses and defensive stops by the Mizzou defense and Sauerwein kept the Cowgirls' lead at one.
However, the Cowgirls would finally create some breathing room in the 81st minute when Brown connected on her third goal of the year off a double assist from Lopez and Megan Marchesano.
“I felt like we had to put one away, and I just happened to be that one,” Brown said.
Brown's goal helped seal the win as the Cowgirl defense kept Missouri off the scoreboard to give OSU its third-straight win over the Tigers.
“Missouri is a tough team – they were battling hard up top and had some big girls in the air competing,” said OSU goalie AD Franch, who recorded her third shutout of the season. “We stepped up and took care of business. It was a tough shutout. It's great to win, and as long as we keep doing that, I'm alright.”
OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowgirls travel to Norman to take on Bedlam-rival Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
