Oklahoma State vs. Houston Post-Game Quotes
May 27, 2011 – Cowgirl Stadium – Stillwater, Okla.
OSU Head Coach Rich Wieligman
On the game
“That was the type of game we have been playing. We are getting clutch hits, scoring runs and figuring out how to get out of innings. Kat threw a good game. They are making good plays at the right time. We are making good pitches and keeping them from scoring. I liked our defense and I liked what we did swinging the bat. I guess you can't complain when at the end of the day you win it, so I like what they did today.”
On Kat Espinosa's pitching
“Kat did a great job. I thought she did a good job of getting ahead and making pitches. They didn't really hit the ball real hard, just a bunch of jam shots and things like that kept it in front of us. They can get all the hits they want as long as we don't let them score. That is the key.”
OSU pitcher Kat Espinosa
On how she deals with tough situations during the game
“I try to keep my head relaxed. I just try to think like there is a runner on second or third, but I can get this next batter out to make up for those hits.”
On the confidence she gains from her defense in the field
“It is really nice to have the defense that we have. It is a huge relief. I trust Mariah and my whole defense 100 percent with any kind of pop-up or any kind of play basically.”
OSU catcher Ashley Boyd
On the two-run double
“It was a pitch I liked and I was just trying to get something on the green to get us a little cushion. I have been struggling the past week or so hitting, so I just went out there and saw a pitch I liked and hit it. I hit it as hard as I could, ran for it and hoped that it would fall.”
On if the team is thinking about being one game away
“I think we'd be lying to say we aren't, but we are keeping it one pitch at a time and one inning at a time. We still have one win, we aren't through to the next round yet. Houston is going to put up a fight and we know that.”
OSU third baseman Mariah Gearhart
On working on bunting
"Bunting is just as important as hitting for me and I have been struggling getting my bunts down at Tennessee. So to finally get one down tonight was a relief and I know that it fires them up every time. If I get it down, I have a higher chance of being safe."
On being superstitious
"It is more keeping routine rather than superstition, like keeping ourselves comfortable and doing the same things."
Houston Head Coach Kyla Holas
Opening statement
“First of all, I thought today was a decent event. I was really pleased with Oklahoma State with hosting such a good thing, so thank you to them for that. They've done a great job. As far as our performance, I think it comes down to timely hitting. 10 hits should put more runs on the board and hopefully tomorrow that's going to be the difference.”
On not being able to hit with runners in scoring position
“As a coach, that's what you practice all day. That's what we worked on all week is getting that one-out, two-out hit. For us, we are a little frustrated right now, but we're confident in the fact that we know what we need to adjust so I think that anytime you can have a plan, you're going to be in a little better mindset the next day.”
On facing OSU's Kat Espinosa
“I didn't think we were thrown off at all. 10 hits doesn't say that a team's thrown off. I think it was just choice selection on those one-out, two-out opportunities.”
On facing OSU in the regular season
“That was so long ago. These teams are so different now than they were back then. I don't think either one of us would say that we are the same team we were in February. We have a job to do and today we did not do that and hopefully tomorrow we can.”
Houston pitcher Diedre Outon
On if OSU seems different now than when they played earlier this year
“I honestly don't remember. I didn't pitch that game, but I know they've gotten better and so have we. Just like coach said, it's about tomorrow coming out ready to hit the ball when there's runners in scoring position.”
Houston pitcher Amanda Crabtree
On being replaced by Outon
“It was just something we wanted to be careful about. Diedre's done a great job all year, so I think that was a good option to go to. They had gotten a run off me, so I don't think it was a bad option to go to something different and switch it up a little bit, so I thought that it was for the best.”
On facing OSU and her former teammates
“Honestly, it really wasn't that different from any other game. It was actually, I thought, a benefit to me because the surroundings were known. It was kind of like a second home field for me. It really wasn't that different. I took every batter just as I take every other batter on another team. It was really another game.”
On what the team will do to get ready for Saturday
“I think that we just need to reset. We met a lot of our goals that we wanted. We just didn't get the timely hits that we needed. We outhit them and so I just think that they did a better job of stringing it together, rather than we didn't. I just think that we need to refocus, reset, know what our jobs are and do that better tomorrow.”
