NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma State track and field program finished its first day at the 2011 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday as trio of OSU athletes opened up competition on day one of the event, held at Oklahoma's John Jacobs Track Complex.
Joseph Manilafasha, a sophomore from Denver, Colo., finished 21st in the men's 10,000 meters with a time of 31:58.74. It was his first time to run in the event this year.
Kevin Colon, a freshman from Kansas City, Mo., joined him in the 10k, but was not able to finish the event. It was the first time in his collegiate career he has competed in the event.
Cailtin Way was the only competitor on the women's side, as she recorded a foul in hammer throw.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls are both back in action Saturday for day two of the event. OSU coach Dave Smith said he is looking forward to seeing several athletes compete.
“I'm looking forward to watching Taylor Buck in the high jump tomorrow,” Smith said. “We are excited about what he's done this year. The men's 1,500 should be a good event for us. Johnathan Stublaski, Tom Farrell, Raul Botezan, and Shane Moskowitz all have a chance to make the finals.
“On the women's side, Natalja Piliusina should have a really day in the 800 meters. She's ranked No. 1 in the conference. Mihaela Susa should also have a good race in the 1,500. She's coming off an injury and isn't 100 percent, but she's tough and will do well. Teran Mixon, Jacqueline Campos, Caileigh Glenn and Victoria Hanna all have a chance of getting into the final as well.”
OSU's schedule Saturday includes the women's long jump (1 p.m.), women's 1,500 meters (2 p.m.) men's 1,500 meters (2:20 p.m.), men's high jump (2:30 p.m.), women's 800 meters (4:20 p.m.) and the men's 800 meters (4:35 p.m.).
