Oklahoma State's Cowboy Basketball team hosted a basketball skills training session for nearly 150 Special Olympians inside Gallagher-Iba Arena this morning. The athletes were taught several fundamentals, including dribbling, passing and shooting.
Cowboy newcomer Philip Jurick was in charge of the partner-passing drills, teaching both the chest pass and the bounce pass. Junior Jéan-Paul Olukemi taught the Special Olympians the basic ball-handling and dribbling skills.
Sophomore Markel Brown showed the athletes the proper shooting skills, while senior Darrell Williams taught layups. Junior Reger Dowell organized a game of Knockout, while senior Keiton Page showed the players how to play Hot Shot.
After the event, coach Travis Ford and the Cowboys visited with the Olympians, signing autographs and taking pictures.
The Cowboys also hosted a basketball training session in 2009, and hope to make the session an annual event. Oklahoma State annually hosts the Oklahoma Special Olympics in May of each year, and this gives the olympians another opportunity to come on the OSU campus and meet some of the student-athletes up-close and personal.
