Hunziker Wins Bill Teegins Award

OKLAHOMA CITY — Organizers of the Warren Spahn Award Gala announced that Dave Hunziker, the “Voice of the Cowboys” for Oklahoma State University, is the 2010 Bill Teegins Excellence in Sportscasting Award winner.
The Teegins Award is presented annually to an outstanding sportscaster with Oklahoma ties. In his 10th season as the play-by-play announcer for OSU football and men's basketball, Hunziker has announced more than 400 Cowboy athletic contests and has been on the microphone for some of OSU's most memorable athletic moments, including the basketball team's run to the 2004 Final Four and the football team's record setting season in 2010.
Randy Cassimus, chair of the Teegins Award selection committee, said it will be a pleasure to present this year's award to Hunziker. "We are thrilled to have Dave Hunziker as this year's Teegins Award recipient. Dave stepped into a very difficult circumstance 10 years ago and, through his tremendous ability and professionalism, has long since won over a university's fan base and his colleagues in the business."
The Teegins Award honors previous OSU men's basketball play-by-play announcer Bill Teegins, who died tragically in a 2001 plane crash, along with nine OSU basketball players and support personnel. Teegins donated many hours to the Oklahoma sports community as a volunteer and was inducted posthumously into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2002.
Hunziker, who stepped into Teegins' position in 2001, said it will be a tremendous honor to receive the Teegins Award. “It is certainly one of the highlights of my career. Bill Teegins was a tremendous broadcaster and a great man. We share a connection through the OSU family. To be honored with this award, named after one of the legends in sports broadcasting in our state, is very, very special to me."
The Teegins Award will be presented to Hunziker at the Warren Spahn Award Gala, hosted by Oklahoma City's Bricktown Rotary Club and the Jim Thorpe Association. The gala will be held on January 20th at the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame & Jim Thorpe Museum in Oklahoma City. Tickets are available now. Proceeds will benefit several local charities including Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Autism Walk, Red Ribbon Week, Christmas Connection and Alzheimer's Walk.
Previous Teegins Award winners include John Brooks, Bob Carpenter, Joe Simpson, Bob Barry Sr., Bobby Murcer, Curt Gowdy, Ross Porter, Bill Mercer and John Rooney.
In addition to the Teegins Award, the Warren Spahn Award will be presented at the gala to this year's best left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. The 2010 Spahn Award winner is David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays.
