TULSA, Okla. – The No. 59-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team cruised to an easy win Saturday in its first dual match of the 2011 season, knocking off the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 6-1, at Tulsa's Case Tennis Center.
“It was a good win against quality team from the SEC and a great way to start off the year,” coach Chris Young said. “It will be even tougher tomorrow against a great team from North Texas. The girls will have to play great and I'm sure they will.”
The match began with doubles play, where OSU went a perfect 3-0 to claim the doubles team point and outscored the Bulldogs by a total of 24-8.
The domination continued in singles play, as the Cowgirls didn't lose a set at the Nos. 2-6 positions.
Sophomore-transfer C.C. Sardinha didn't disappoint in her first dual match as a Cowgirl, winning over MSU's Danielle Terpko, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles to put the Cowgirls up 2-0.
Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana, playing in her first collegiate match, followed Sardinha with straight-set wins at Nos. 5 and 4, respectively, to give OSU a 4-0 advantage and seal the team win.
Sarah Meghoufel, the 2010 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and Big 12 No. 4 singles co-champion, started the year at the No. 1 spot, but fell to MSU' Alexandra Perper after dropping two tough sets.
The dual wrapped up with a pair of wins by Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Leyla Simmons to make the final score 6-1, OSU.
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday, facing the reining Sun Belt champion North Texas Mean Green, ranked No. 66 by the ITA, at 2 p.m. at the Case Center.
