Cowgirl Tennis Opens Play In Norman

NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team opened its second fall event of the 2010 season Friday, as several Cowgirls advanced through the singles and doubles brackets at the Sooner Fall Invitational, hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The tournament format features A, B, C and D singles brackets and A and B doubles brackets. Each bracket opened with a round of 16, and OSU had at least two athletes compete in each one.
The Cowgirls had an impressive showing on the first day of the tournament, as they won six of their nine singles matches and four doubles matches.
The doubles highlight came from senior Nataliya Shatkovskaya and freshman Kanyapat Narattana, who rolled to an 8-5 win over Oklahoma's Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster before upsetting the No. 55-ranked duo in the country in Wichita State's Veronika Blaskova/Delia Damaschin, 8-6, to move on to Saturday's semifinal round.
The pair also had a strong showing on the singles courts, where Narattana earned her first collegiate win with a, 6-1, 6-0, decision over Damaschin and Shatkovska knocked off Oklahoma's Tara Eckel, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Joining Narattana and Shatkovska as Cowgirls to claim singles wins were Sarah Meghoufel, C.C. Sardinha, Malika Rose and Alisa Buslaieva.
The Cowgirls continue play Saturday in Norman at day two of the Sooner Fall Invitational.
