TULSA, Okla. – Former Oklahoma State tennis star and 2009 ITA National Player of the Year Oleksandr Nedovyesov earned the biggest win of his career thus far Tuesday, knocking off Taylor Dent, the No. 77-ranked singles player in the world, in the USTA Challenger of Oklahoma, an ATP Challenger Tour event at Philcrest Hills Tennis Club.
A three-time All American and the most decorated athlete in the history of the Cowboy tennis program, Nedovyesov defeated the No. 1-seeded Dent in straight sets, winning 6-4, 3-0, before Dent retired.
“It was the best win of his career so far,” OSU tennis coach James Wadley said. “He's still looking to sign a professional contract and get sponsored so this could help him a lot with that.”
Nedovyesov, who was named the 2009-10 OSU Student-Athlete of the Year for his outstanding work in classroom, is still enrolled at Oklahoma State pursuing a master's degree in international studies while he pursues his professional tennis career.
The Alushta, Ukraine, native resumes play in the $50,000 challenger tournament Thursday, taking on Michael McClune, ranked No. 381 by the ATP, at 11 a.m.
