SECAUCUS, N.J. - Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley became the first player in school history taken in the WNBA Draft on Thursday when she was selected in the first round with the No. 8 pick by the Los Angeles Sparks.
"It feels great to get this opportunity and it is all so exciting. This all came up so fast and I just can't wait to get started," Riley said. "Getting to play professionally will be a breath of fresh air and is something I have dreamed about. It will be an honor, which is a great feeling."
Riley, who earlier in the day was named to the USA Basketball Select Team, was tabbed as a second-team All-American by the Associated Press this year after averaging a Big 12-leading 26.7 points and 6.5 assists per game. Riley was named a first-team all-league selection as well after becoming the first player in Big 12 history to lead the league in scoring three times.
The Dallas, Texas native scored 909 points this past season, which stands as the 10th-best single-season total in NCAA history. She also dished out a 220 assists, which stands as the fourth-best single-season total in Big 12 history.
The 2010 Nancy Lieberman Award winner as the nation's top point guard, Riley finished her career with 2,835 points, the 13th-best total in NCAA history and 707 assists, which ranks first all time in school history.
