AUSTIN, Texas. – The No. 49 Oklahoma State men's tennis team was eliminated from the 2010 Big 12 Men's Tennis Championship Friday, falling, 4-0, in the opening round to 10th-ranked and second-seeded Texas A&M at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Cowboys gave up an early lead to the Aggies after losing the first two doubles matches finished.
Maxi Kuhn and Ilija Martinoski dropped the No. 3 match to Texas A&M's Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover, 8-2, in the first match finished, followed by Anton Bobytskyi and Eric West dropping the No. 2 match to A&M's Marcus Lunt and Alexey Grigorov, 8-5.
Although OSU led at the No. 2 and 5 singles lines, the Cowboys couldn't climb out of the hole, as Maxi Kuhn, Eric West and Anton Bobytskyi dropped the No. 6, 4 and 2 matches, respectively, in two sets to give the Aggies a 4-0 win.
“Texas A&M is just a little bit stronger than us, a little bit stronger in doubles,” coach James Wadley said. “They were able to dominate us at five and six and their number two guy has had a really good year. We lost those three singles and we were in the other three, not necessarily winning them but we were in those matches. They are just a little bit stronger team and that's why they are ranked in the top-10 in the country and we are ranked about 40-something. They played real well. Our guys battled, but we just weren't strong enough to beat the Aggies.”
The Cowboys now wait to find out if they have earned an NCAA Tournament berth. The bracket will be released, Tuesday, May 4.
