Norman, Okla. -- Oklahoma State scored one run in the top of the fifth but fell to the 12th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 11-1 before nearly 1,500 fans here Wednesday night at Marita Hynes Field. The Bedlam rivals split a pair of Big 12 Conference games this season, with the Cowgirls taking the lone non-conference contest for a 2-1 series win.
Oklahoma scored three runs in the bottom of the first, including a solo home run by Haley Anderson off Cowgirl starter Anna Whiddon. The Sooners scored their second run on an RBI single by Haley Nix, and scored their third run with the bases loaded on an illegal pitch by reliever Kat Espinosa. OU made it 6-0 in the third on a three-run homer by Katie Norris.
With the game clearly out of hand, Oklahoma scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. A two-run home run by Jessica Shults and a double by Lindsay Vandever ran Espinosa from the circle. Taylor Marcum walked back-to-back hitters, loading the bases, and Norris singled in the third run of the inning. A walk issued to Dani Dobbs scored a fourth run, and pinch runner Evan Sallis scored the final run of the inning when pinch hitter Wendy Trott grounded into a double play.
Oklahoma State scored its lone run of the game in the top of the fifth. With one out, Sam Heinlein doubled down the leftfield line. OU starter Keliani Ricketts hit Chelsea Garcia with a pitch, and a single by Kelsey Anchors loaded the bases. Mariah Gearhart grounded out to third, but pinch runner Breana Casaus scored on the play.
Anchors went 2-for-2 for the Cowgirls, and Heinlein's double was the only other hit of the game for OSU. Oklahoma State fell to 41-11 overall this season and 10-4 in Big 12 play, while the Sooners took over sole possession of second place in the Big 12 standings with an 11-3 mark in league play.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Saturday, May 1, as OSU hosts the Nebraska Huskers at 2 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
