Lubbock, Texas -- Oklahoma State's seventh-ranked softball team, riding a 17-game winning streak, was swept by the Texas Tech Red Raiders here Thursday afternoon, 6-0 and 4-1, at Rocky Johnson Field.
In the first contest, Tech scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits, two walks and an error. A base hit by Raven Richardson, followed by a wild pitch and a stolen base on ball four to McKenzie Clemmons put runners at first and third. Leah Legler hit a base hit through the right side, scoring Richardson. Another walk loaded the bases, and two unearned runs scored when starting pitcher Anna Whiddon overthrew the catcher attempting to get the force out at home.
The Red Raiders added a run in the fourth, and scored two more on a home run by Mikey Kenney in the fifth inning.
Oklahoma State scored first in game two. Julie Ward led off the second inning with a home run that cleared not only the fence in centerfield but also flew beyond the outer fence enclosing the ballpark, an estimated 275 feet. It was her ninth home run of the season.
Texas Tech fired back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits, including a two-run homer off the bat of Logan Hall. The Red Raiders added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Stephanie Drewry singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit by Emily Bledsoe, her second RBI of the game.
Whiddon, who threw the entire first game, fell to 20-4 on the year. Freshman Kat Espinosa, who threw a complete game two, dropped to 17-4.
Oklahoma State (40-9 overall, 9-2 Big 12) will travel to Austin, Texas, on Friday for a two-game series with the 15th-ranked Texas Longhorns. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 1 p.m., while Sunday's game will start at noon.
