STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State scored five runs in the second inning and never looked back as the 25th-ranked Cowgirls defeated No. 14 Louisville 7-2 here Friday night in NCAA softball action.
The Cardinals led off the scoring when catcher Melissa Roth hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the first inning.
Cowgirl catcher Tamara Brown led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run of her own, her second of the season. Senior Megan Castle and sophomore Chelsea Garcia followed the game-tying bomb with back-to-back base hits and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Anchors.
One batter later, Castle scored when leadoff hitter Mariah Gearhart singled to left field, and Garcia scored on a followup base hit by Katelyn Bright. With two outs, Julie Ward hit a double off the centerfield fence, scoring both Gearhart and Bright and giving the Cowgirls a 5-1 lead.
Gearhart led off the fourth with a bunt single and took second on a throwing error, then scored her second run of the game on a double by Alysia Hamilton. With two outs, Hamilton scored on a base hit up the middle by designated player Amy Graham.
Louisville's Roth led off the top of the sixth with another solo homer, her fourth of the year.
Senior pitcher Anna Whiddon (9-2) threw a complete game, scattering four hits while striking out 13 and walking two. It was OSU's second win over a ranked opponent this season.
Oklahoma State (12-5) will play Nevada on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at ASA/Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, followed by a bedlam matchup with Oklahoma at 3 p.m. as part of The Preview Featuring Bedlam. The Cowgirls will return home to face the Nevada Wolfpack again on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
